What's your oil pressure - with the covers off it should throwing oil everywhere. I would be tearing down.
At first start up it will be 50. When the rpms kick down it drops to 20 idling and will go as high as 45 around 3k or more. Once it's really warmed up at idle it'll drop to around 10 or so.

Notice they are vortec heads. Whats the lift on the cam? The valve retainers maybe hitting the guides. The say max lift with vortec heads that have not been modded is 480. But that would have to be checked during assembly. my buddy had a sb chev witht the same noise. His prob was the valves were just touching the pistons.

Cam is a Lunati voodoo 268. Heads were supposedly cut for the aftermarket springs.

Is there any oil in the engine??? The heads look bone dry.

It looks fresh - was it rebuilt not long ago ??
Supposedly it only has 1000miles on it. I bought it as is from a guy off Craigslist. He said he got t-boned and the S-10 he had it in was totaled. He pulled the engine and it sat on engine stand for 7mos until I bought it.
