Lost 2004r transmission.

So you bought the transmission from one guy and it wasn't right from the time you put it in, so you had another guy fix it and it made it 40 miles. The place you bought it from is in the clear because you had someone else work on it. The second guy, that rebuilt it, is on the hook. His rebuild made it 40-60 miles, yup, he's definitely on the hook.

I'm a little confused on your description of 'the shaft broke' and the driveshaft was so tight that he needed a ry bar to get the driveshaft out. What shaft broke? And did you get the driveshaft shortened? Sounds like the output shaft was loaded due to an overlength driveshaft, if that's the case, then that will break every transmission out there. Have you pulled the driveshaft since the second/third failure?

Not yet. I’ve spent the last couple of days working on a replacement. I did talk with him while the transmission was out. He grabbed the tail shaft and pulled it and it had 2-3 inches of play in it. That’s what caused him to feel the shaft was broken

What all is done to the Olds 403?

I wish I could talk about what has been done. I just retired and my knowledge of engines is very limited. The only thing I can tell you is the engine builder put a stud girdle in due to some parts being weakness in the lower end of the 403. The guy that built the motor drag raced a oldsmobile. He came highly praised from my tristate area

I want to go to a 700r4 transmission in my 87 442. My 200r4 just blew up today. I have a small block 403 mildly built . I would like to put in a 700r4. What are the positive and negatives of running that combination?

Sounds like you have a nice 442. Transmissions from MT are hit or miss....mostly miss. Buyer beware.
As noted, you will be ahead if you send your good 442 core to a reputable builder like CK performance or Extreme Automatics. Do it once, do it right. KZF 442 cores are worth money....Putting a 700R4 in your car or anything other than a 200-4R will cost you money in parts and fuel mileage. If you really must use the inferior 700R4 you will need a transdapt adapter, different drive shaft and cross member.

Girdles are good insurance on an Olds engine but in my opinion aren't necessary for a mild 403. I've run (2) 403's in the 12's and never had issues.

Thanks for the info. It has been along journey for me with this car. I’m gun shy now with everything I do to the car. Thanks for the compliment
