I like the 200-4R better than the 700 for the 1-2 gear spread alone. I have a 200 in my Elky behind a mild 350 and a 700 in my wagon behind a mild 350. It's not a hassle in either one, I just prefer the 200 spread.
Just go buy another 2004r from a transmission shop like art carr, etc. Then use your transmission as a spare if something goes wrong and have someone that knows transmissions in your town help install it and your back to driving your car.
I said buy from a transmission from a shop that isn't local then have the local shop install it then your fixed. How hard is that to do or downgrade your setup with a transmission a shop locally can do and complain the whole time you own the car. There's plenty of good transmission shops that will build a 2004r for you as long as your serious and have the money to get it done. That’s the problem. I don’t have a transmission shop that will build a 200. If I go with a 400 or a 700, what kind of changes do I need to make to them for maximum output?
I appreciate the info. This is the third 200 I have had.I tried to re-use this but no one in my area will rebuild it. I live in southern Indiana and the best offer I had was to send mine off to jasper. They classified it as a custom job. They wanted me to pull it out ship it, wait 6-8 weeks for rebuild and then pay shipping back. I had one from a major franchise and it lasted about 3 months. In my neck of the woods the 2004r is bad news.
The 2004r is the correct transmission for your car. This trans is well known for being tricky to rebuild correctly. You made the mistake of having it done ( twice ) by Bozos. Buy a trans or have yours rebuild from a REPUTABLE builder of 2004r's. There are plenty around. Many hang around the Grand National boards. Do it right and be done with it. Shoehorning in a different trans is not the proper course of action.
Also, I see no reason why the last Bozo who butchered your transmission is not responsible for f*cking up the rebuild. I wouldn't want them to redo it since they're obviously incompetent but I don't see how you should be on the hook for their mistake.
