If 2004r is so easy to rebuild ( and upgraded to handle more power ) why do you suppose most local transmission shops fail miserably at doing so?

Remember, everything is easy to somebody that actually knows what they're doing. I play drums. It's easy.....for me. Others find it impossible to even keep a beat. It's just the way it is.
I rebuilt mine,on my own, first one, works great and it was easy,if a shop can’t rebuild a 200-4R then they won’t be able to do a 700r4 either they both operate on the same principles and both have tv cables, there are lots of reputable builders around to work with

That's my point. You say it was easy because you know how to do it or you got lucky. There are certain clearances in a 2004r that are important to get just right. If they are not they will fail prematurely. Joe Bob's transmission shop down the street doesn't know or pay attention to these critical aspects during the build and that's why they fail.

All I'm saying is, have a reputable builder who knows 2004r transmission's do the job and everythings good. Lots of different transmission's have their little quirks. It's wise to have somebody who understands those quirks working on it.

I had to take an OZ code 2004R apart 3 times and spent $2000 more than planned before getting it right. This was doing it working side by side with a guy that has been building transmissions for 30 years for a living. Among many other tricks, clutch clearances in these things are critical. My advice, send it to one of the good shops recommended in this thread and save yourself some stress and money.

Thanks for the input. I broke my hand and now I’m not help. I’ve tried the shops around here nobody wants to take the rebuild.

I agree with Anubis and DoubleV when it comes to clearances in a 200R4. There are other modifaction that need to be done that the average Joe trans shop cant do and not talking about just installing billet parts. You need to ask your self, would you want a Dentist to work on your heart or a heart surgeon its no diffrent when comes to a 200R4 trans. My trans was built by Dave Husek, Turbo Buick Performance.

Well with all of this info, let's hope the op sticks with the 2004r and has it rebuild buy a reputable 2004r builder.

The biggest problem with these transmissions is setting the T.V. pressure , that needs to be done by the installer if it's not set properly then you will burn this unit up in a few miles. If you purchase one and install it yourself you need to make SURE THAT YOU HAVE THIS SET CORRECTLY. If you have any questions you can PM me and I would be glad to help. Good luck

That's the gospel truth! I got my '87 MCSS for crumbs b/c an unadjusted TV cable caused the belief that trans was bad. I readjusted it myself and drove it from TX to GA twice.
