Hey all I was wanting to know if the problem I am having could be the torque converter housing cracked or something with the flywheel? The car has been running fine for the most part but when it would get warmed up it would start to have a tapping from under the car like right behind the oil pan closest to the drain. At first it was light tapping and did it when driving and even when I had it in park it would do it then sometimes it wouldn't. Anyway i would step on the accelerator real hard and it would fix the sound. Then it would come back and since then it has gotten louder and even when u first crank it up you hear the tapping. Seems like when it got warmed up it would do it. But I am certain it isn't coming from the engine as far as something damaged internally. I also went around and tried to tighten the flywheel bolts as best as I could and they didn't seem to be loose or anything. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

The heat shield on the catalytic converter used to rattle when I would come to a stop on my car. It was rusted at the attachment points and was loose. I'm not sure this is the same type of rattle you have or not, though. Just a suggestion.

I've read the flexplate/flywheel can crack and it sounds like an engine knock. That might be it. I don't have any experience with that though. If I remember right, I read that in the Olds 307 FAQ/info page on 442.com.

I had something like that in my v-6. Found out it was the fuel pump.
I figured it out when i was under the car and looked at the fuel hoses going into the fuel pump and I saw the hoses pulsing a little to the beat of the click i was hearing.
I pulled the fuel pump and found it had a plate rivited on the end of the arm and the plate was loose enough to rap when hit by the cam.
I replaced it with an AC Delco and it didn't have the riveted plate on it.

No more ticking now.
Yeah at first I thought it was the engine, but it would come and go mysteriously, no real ryme or reason for it. You could be next to the car and hear it and then in seconds gone and then back again and sometimes loader then other times.

Disconnect the torque converter from the flywheel and push it back away from the flywheel. See if the noise goes away. That will tell you if the engine or transmission/torque converter is making the noise.

Check and see if the dust cover for the flywheel/tourque converter is bent or dented and rubbing somewhere.

Also, check things on your motor that are running on the belts. I knew a guy that bought a V8 blazer with a brand new crate engine in it for $500. The sold it to him because the new motor was knocking and he figured it was gonna die soon. After my buddy bought it he played around with it for a bit and realized the knocking was coming from the powewr steering pump lol. So he scored a new crate engine and a V8 blazer for $500. 😀

I had one with a crack in the Flex Plate it was really more of a ticking sound that would speed up with RPM and get louder under load. I took of the dust cover off and could see the crack in mine. Take of the dust cover off and let it run to see if it is any louder

i stretched the boltholes on my TC once. made a horrible tapping/knockig sound at idle and deceleration. welded it up and called it a day!

Everyone thanks for the info. I will try everything suggested but this reply sounds like it might get me somewhere. And is disconnecting the torque converter from the flywheel a hard job? Doing that should really tell me whats up like buddy suggested I would think.
