New member, name is Craig and my son and I just bought a 1979 Hurst optioned Olds that is going to receive a 2005 LQ4/4L80. Experienced G body members who have done similar swaps please help guide us on the details if we have questions if you don't mind . I have surfed this site for a couple of weeks and learned quite a bit about it so far, but not 100% confident with this chassis yet.
Bit of background on me and cars, I have done an LS swap on my 71 C10 shortbed and I did learn allot from it, but have lots to learn. My son and I found a wrecked Silverado 2500 that had all of the right stuff, LQ4 and the 4L80, harness/computer/all donor parts so we kinda lucked out on our parts available to make this easy as possible for us to tackle.
We were originally looking for a classic ride to put this engine in (pre '74), but nothing was found that was cheap enough for our budget or suitable enough that had style and a coolness factor that we liked so we broadened our search to include the late 70's to early 80's GM cars and while they are good platforms to modify BUT we live in CA where the emissions laws restrict us from having too much fun so we have some challenges ahead of us to make it legal to drive SO, I like the G body cars, GN was our first choice (prices are becoming out of reach for the average) so I moved onto the Malibu, 2 doors and the wagons I love the styling on but we could not locate one that fit our budget or needs so we came across this Hurst Olds that was advertised without an engine.
Cool factor=check. Old school connection=check. Ability to make a cool street car=definitely.
We drove to look at it, talked it over and while there was negatives overall decided we wanted it, paid less than I thought we thought the owner would take so the deal was struck and we towed home our new engineless G body. Has the original gold and white paint, NO rust, complete front end (grill is mint) dual gate shifter and wheels are on the car. Yes, it needs a resto overall but it is complete which is important when looking for a special interest car like this one.
I have a few cars that I have restored and currently under restoration (70 SS Chevelle '61 Continental 71 C10) but I am a hobbyist so my funds and time will be limited. I want to enjoy this car for what it is, and do it low buck hence the name 'low buck chuck'.
Enough of the chat, here are a few (crap night time) pics:
