okgot '76 350 olds, stock with a rhodes 292 cam with .480 lift, q-jet and stock exhaust in a 86 cutlass, used to be a 'y' 307, its hard to start, have tryed moving timing and changing starter, when finally get it started and up to temp, when i get in the secondaries it blows gas out top of carb and makes a popping noise, won't run above about 3500rpm, didin't do anything to dist. but flywheights are a little worn, any ideas?

Sounds like its running extremely rich and flooding out the carb. Either that or the cam is too big and causing the valves to open early. Did you just put the cam in? If so, did you make sure you lined up the timing marks right?

yeah timing marks lined uup and didn't degree cam, didn't have tools to do it, just put in new bearings cam and lifters, have dealt with a few big cams in the past and have never seen 0ne do this, it has decent throttle response until i get into the secondaries, then starts popping and won;t go above about 3500, and sorry its not a rhodes it is a howards cam

Maybe the choke on the secondaries isn't functioning properly. Either that or the secondaries are out of adjustment and flooding the carb out.

Non adjustable on Olds engines.

yeah all you can do is tighten down, but it does have a little lifter noise, but not bad. just wondering if timing in dist is problem or maybe weak valve springs? from idle, about 1000rpm, to 2500 it sounds good.

i would think i would have black smoke if carb was flooding, and i don't

Does it rev up fine without the secondaries opening?

yeah it seams to but still about 3500 is all it will run, it still makes a popping noise, well it just won't run any faster and i keep pushing throttle and then secondaries open and it starts to pop, its not a backfire just a strange sound. i work on john deere equipment for a living and havn't been around older v 8's for a while so i'm bad out of practice, and this thing is really getting next to me!!!!! this may be a stupid thought but if the cat converter was stopped up could it cause this?
