What is a "bro horsepower quote"?

Did you read that whole thread? Several of the posters claim to be making 1000+ whp on stock stuff. Maybe they have minor problems but at that far out of the norm even a slight misfire produces catastrophic results. The engines being cheap does tend to make people a little reckless but you also get to see the potential of the platform so there is that.

Yep read the whole thread, twice. Sure plenty of people are making 1000+ hp on stock stuff but they are running those at the ragged edge, hence all the breaking parts, why not spend a little more and quit popping engines? I'm in no way debating the platform, I believe in it and have parts to go turbo after I shakedown my combo, but my problem becomes most of the internet is only into big dick swinging numbers and how cheap can they do it, the throw away engine amplifies this sentiment. Quotes like "4.8's are way stronger. Physics don't lie" is bro science, nothing to back that up other than internet talk, four posts later he even says it's stronger "in theory". This is not math and science. Potential of the platform means nothing to me if I go through an engine every 6 months because I'm overboosting stock parts that have 150K on them. My .02

I agree wholeheartedly. Internet would have you believe that you are a total failure if your junk makes less than xxxx horsepower. I don't believe most of those people have ever actually experienced power levels as high as they think they have.

Bro quotes.....that's funny sh*t

"bro quotes" and "big dick swinging numbers." Hahaha! Made my day. I'm a tuning neophyte but I couldn't agree more.

Dyno numbers are just that - numbers.

Matt H. is a great guy and extremely intelligent, but keep in mind that he has turned sloppy mechanics into more than a you tube and facebook phenomenon. He's making a fair amount of money from keeping an audience.

The video of him just missing 1000whp with the Colorado when he lifted a head gasket is proof enough. He knew he was out of fuel on the pass before he lifted the HG, but carried on with more boost - shocker - HG lifted and lead to a crooked rod or two IIRC. He didn't care, it gave him more footage for a teardown (and I'll bet he had fun the entire time and I know I had fun watching it.) I don't blame him at all, but if you're referring to trusted tunes found on the internet, then keep in mind how they are found.

All boost builds need to creep up on the tune to get maximum performance and the performance needs to be measureable on either a track or dyno, otherwise expect plenty of practice at swapping motors and parts.

Motorheadmike is spot on with his assessment of how to creep up on a tune IMO.

Working your way up to a good tune is important. I tried it blind the first time which wasn't a real great idea with a turbo car. I had a professional tuner with an excellent reputation tune my car. He had it for a week building up a very good all around program for it. It ran very well, was consistent, everything a competent tune should be. I wanted more so I started playing with timing and fuel. Datalog pulls, check plugs, even bore scoped it a few times to check out the tops of the pistons for anything out of the ordinary... just eased into it slowly. No signs of detonation or fuel issues. All it takes is a tank of bad gas or a sticky wastegate if you work it up to this level without another layer of insurance (water/meth, mix race gas).

Sloppy Mechanics has changed from slamming junk into old Fairmonts in to a money making machine. Now Matt is slinging products and has monetized his efforts. Yay Capitalism!

As the saying goes: Believe half of everything you see, and nothing of what you hear.

Not exactly true. Matt doesn't sell any products........ in his posts and videos he points everyone towards VS Racing for turbos, injectors, waste gates, etc.

He has mentioned that the ad revenue from YouTube amounts to a few hundred $ a year. The only financial benefit I can see from the additional exposure is to his sideline tuning business....but I doubt he is getting filthy rich off of it.

Don't be naive. Bear with me here since we've been without internet since before Christmas so I cannot totally validate this with the accuracy I prefer.

His wife went to Milwaukee Tools and they comp'd him some new tools based on his exposure and use of their equipment. You don't think he gets discounts on parts, especially when he name drops (turbos, wiring, loud valves...)? Come on. I am not saying he is selling out - just getting his due. Nothing wrong there. BUT! That all changes a man's perspective when he owes others. Check out AvE's channel that man bow's to no sponsor - but, supports this Paetron fan base.

Most annoying shill on YouTube? Mike Finnegan from Roadkill. FML... he isn't shy about it either.

You used the term "money making machine" to describe sloppy mechanics. I wouldn't consider a couple of free tools and the occasional free or discounted part to be all that lucrative.......considering the hours he has invested.
