The LT1's have 2 knock sensors on them, one on each side of oil pan, you need to remove these to flush the coolant properly, this will make sure you have a clean passage for the coolant to travel. Mine only had 37k miles on it and there was quite a lot of crap in there. As others have said, the water pump is unique to the LT1 and there is no belt that drives it, although there is a small splined coupling that drives it, sounds like you have had the pump off already, did you put the coupling on the new pump when replacing the old pump? It's easy to miss if old pump was grease covered or really cruddy. I attached a picture of the coupling, check your old pump to see if still attached.
