Fonz,
That's very noble of you to offer your expertise in making various body/ trim gaskets. I'm having a slight dilemma about my wagon 1/4 window gaskets, or profile strips. They slide into the back of the molding and are very similar to the windshield molding strips. They're usually shot to sh*t from sun/ weather exposure. The moldings are currently off the car along with the 1/4 window glass. I'll need to paint the window channels before replacing the glass and moldings.
I'll see if I can take a pic of them and you could give me an idea whether it's doable.
The gasket, or strips are actually a plastic type material...same basic material as the roof rack strips.

Thanks man!

Jack, I know you've heard about SafariWagon's trick with using the inserts from B-body windshield moldings...
I was over at his place last week, and they look GREAT on his wagon. You'd really have to know your sh*t to be able to tell they aren't the real deal...

Blake,
I know we have been over this in the past. I'm trying to keep other options open in the event that I have trouble finding good strips. But I think that will be the way to go. Older B-bodies used to be all over the boneyards, but they're becoming fewer these days, much like G-bodies.
Are the B-body trim strips much like the A/G-body windshield strips, which has less of an overhang, if I'm making sense.?
I do appreciate your input and suggestions.

They're pretty much the same, just a little larger I believe. Lindsay can tell you for sure.

I've got a good set of originals if you want some pics to compare.

Thanks for the offer, Blake,I appreciate it.
I still have what's left of my strips. I suppose I could use them for comparison purposes. When you mentioned "larger". Do you mean larger in width? If so, I could certainly deal with that.

That reminds me of a nice custom painted Malibu wagon that I saw many years ago. It was even featured in the Florida Cruise-news magazine.
Whoever did the work on the car, used black urethane or butyl caulking to finish off the quarter mouldings. I guess he too encountered the deteriorated plastic strips. The point I'm trying to make is that It looked like sh*t.

I'm going to have to gather up B-body windshield moulding strips. Did Lindsay say how many he needed to accomplish the task?

They're a little wider than the g-body strips.

He didn't say how many he used, but I'd imagine you'd need at least 2 or 3 windshields worth to do all 8 pieces.

I took off a gasket and found this- it is molded hard plastic and shaped to fit over the ribs that are on all wagon roofs. (DOH!~ forgot about those). Plus it has a lip on both sides that the chrome rail sits in. They are actually only about 16" long and they have a hole in one end that the screw passes through, and the other end has a finger that spaces it away from the next one. So in my original picture, those gaps are intentional, but the deterioration is not. This is the only intact one I have. I'm not sure if 19elcamino82 can reproduce this but I'm still grateful for the offer.

hey bonnewagon, i wouldn't be able to make it already curved like the plastic one, since its more of a molded plastic.

but an alternate i can probably do would be i can make it wide enough that whenever you place it over the ribs on the roof and bolt down the chrome trim, the gasket would just get compressed in between the two and follow the curve of the trim and ribs and it would still have a slight lip to it so that it looks like the original. The gasket material would be made of a hard rubber that almost seems plastic like. also i could also make it one piece with the holes properly spaced, and you wont have the gaps anymore, but i don't know if the gaps are crucial. or i can make them to the 16" long that they are now with the hole but remember the finger part i wont be able to do.

if you want i can draw up a picture tomorrow at work so you can get a better idea

Well I guess what we should do is take one a let you try it. It will either work or it won't, but if it works I'll bet all the wagon guys will want some too!

yeah its worth a try. Send me a PM later on so that i can send you my contact information. Remember to send the most complete or best condition gasket and one of the trim pieces so that i can test it to make sure it fits good.

Sounds good, just give me some time as my Daughter's 95' Formula is giving me fits again. Goddamn belt tensioner went bad and caused the belt to break the power steering pump bolts clean off. Another friggin' nightmare with this POS car.
