Pontiacgp, mainly because you have a manual trans swap. CCC got the same MPGs as EFI of the time. Your old CCC may have been out of wack and needed repair or adjustment. Most of the time it is a engine problem that gets the CCC blamed. The CCC can't work right on a engine that isn't running right like vacuum leaks. Most people let their cars run ragged and only gear heads take any decent care of them. I hate to say it but these days you would get rear ended in the slow lane for doing 60. But air drag is much worse at speeds over 60 with every car, it's why the limit used to be 55, to save gas.

no 305 ccc engine will come close to my 355 for fuel economy or power whether it's standard or automatic. Alot has to do with the vortec heads on my engine, the heads on the 305 are junk

Use 305 (059) vortec heads with the GM Qjet vortec intake with EGR provision. Can also use the same intake on a crate L31 (vortec) 350, just have to use a in-tank fuel pump, one can have both vortec and CCC easily. Over on Montecarloss.com they consider vortecs to be very weak castings that are prone to cracking. Anytime they overheat they will crack.

The 305 vortec heads are no where near the same as the 350 vortec heads. They aren't an upgrade. They share the vortec name but that's about it.

the 305 vortec heads are junk and the 350 vortec heads are not prone to cracking. The 602 crates that are used in circle track use the cast iron vortec heads and we have ran a 602 for a few years. It has run at 280º + a few times with no problems. After 5 seasons the engine has been taken apart for repairs and it runs up to 6200 rpm every Saturday nite during the season. I trust you are aware the the CCC only controls idle and part throttle and has no control over the secondaries

Yes I do and it helps saves gas, the computer controls the carb except at WOT. But you can't go WOT on the street for very long. Also controls the timing advance, timing retard for knocks, EGR flow, and lockup for auto transmissions.

As I said alot of Monte Carlo track guys don't trust Vortecs over concerns of cracking. They complain about always finding cracked vortecs in the yards or used sets more often than not being cracked. They also argue you can get much stronger and far better flowing aftermarket heads for the same price that do not require special intake manifolds. The 305 vortecs flow pretty damn well, and even the L69 heads flow well. Smaller bores don't need as much flow for complete cylinder filling and combustion like bigger bores do.
