Malibu Exhaust

I echo the advise that 3" is unecessary unless you are pushing some serious power. It's a pin to make pipes that big fit without rubbing on anything. If you have no emissions requirements and an automatic transmission, use the Summit or Jegs 2-1/2" G-body kits and add the headers and dual hump crossmember. If your body mounts are flattened, you may have some work to do to clear the floorpan. You'll have to add your own X-pipe if you must have that. Both brands basic kits exit under the bumper like a Monte SS, but it's not hard to cut and adapt to exit behind the rear wheels. Stainless Steel is an option, but welding is a problem. It's all how much you want to spend. Coated headers? Extra. Ask Turna nicely and he might even help you.

Ha! None of this is necessary, but 3" exhaust sounds nice........Like Mike Finnegan says: The music of my people!

Also, watch this episode of Engine Masters, 3" with straight through mufflers kills almost NO power!

I only need an exhaust system. Made up my mind on mufflers years ago, already have 1 3/4" coated Schoenfelds and a G force crossmember. I wont settle on an exhaust that goes to the rear bumper. Gotta end behind the rear wheel and I really want the tailpipe to be 2 1/2". Not sure what I'll buy at this point but I have someone that can tig SS tube.

Few things I have tried - I went from 1 3/4 schoenfeld headers to schoenfeld 13/4 stepped to 1 7/8 - no help.
I went from straight exhaust to Pypes x pipe - no help slight loss. (both based on 1/4 mi runs)
2.5 exh will support over 500 HP

How often do you plan to run at 6500 RPM? The dyno pulls showed better torque with the small pipes at 3200. Get the aluminized 2-1/2" system, set the shift point at 3800, and it will still rock. Gets you 15 pound of payload back...

If your good at welding just buy the summit 2.5 exhaust kit h kit or x pipe kit for under 100 dollars and weld it up yourself then buy tailpipes and mufflers separately and have a good exhaust for less than 300 dollars.

I had a 2.5" system made for my 78 with tailpipes behind the tires. I liked that look better. I don't like the high pitched sound of an X pipe, and to me an H-pipe becomes a pain when trying to work under the car.

I bought American racing headers and recently the hooker header back 3" system, paid 670 for the hooker system thru Hooker website, and 1215 for the headers from Summit, I had a hard time to justify the 1400 for ARH exhaust, I bought the headers because everything I have read is that they fit without cutting and grinding. I haven't received headers yet and plan on pulling the engine ad trans out this week, The 406 afr heads and full roller powerplant mated to tko 5 spd is going in, Ill post how well everything fits when I get that far.
