Well, I got the correct headers, they fit well, however my oil pan has small kickouts on each side which caused two issues, the left side wont allow oil filter to slide in or out without loosening the header, which only takes 10 minutes to do, I may put oil filter relocation kit on it. the right side the pipe is kinda close to that kickout of the pan, so I applied heat tape to the pan and header wrap on that pipe, a stock pan wouldn't have any issues, the odd thing is if I could have used the wrong rh header ( old a- body one) I would have been perfect. The hooker 3" exhaust fit very well, had to cut a little on the pipes that go to header collector but was no big deal, Car sounds pretty decent, not to loud but has a good tone, I haven't driven it yet. Still assembling the body.

Care to elaborate on your disdain for ARH?

Its overpriced and there designs are far from the best

This might be true for what Kooks offers. If you go to their website, they don't list having anything for a '78 Malibu other than header gaskets.

No sbc/g-body listing.
No A-body listing other than LS swap headers & BBC flanges.

I realize I'm a little late to this thread, but for anyone else who may be reading through it in the future....

Like the OP, I wanted a 3" mandrel-bent stainless steel exhaust system which exited behind the tires. I found the Pypes system with x-pipe and mufflers for about $500 (I see prices are higher now) and bought p/n SGG13R which includes their "RacePro" mufflers. When it arrived, I took the box to my exhaust shop and had him assemble and install it for me (since I needed him to do a little alteration to my long-tube headers anyway). He did need to add a pair of short extensions for the pipes to reach my headers, but that was no big deal. He did not need to bend a single pipe, which made me happy since he does not have a mandrel bender in his shop. It cleared my G-Force crossmember wonderfully.

This kit was designed for a Monte SS, which means the tail pipes go straight out to the rear and exit under the bumper. I had him cut and rotate these pipes so that they would dump right behind the tires, sorta like the Grand National setup. I like this look a lot more than the Monte SS design.

That was two and a half years ago. I am still completely satisfied with this kit. No rattles, no squeaks, and it doesn't even drone on the highway. (With my tires and gearing, 70 MPH = 2400 rpm.) I cannot imagine being happier with an exhaust system.

I originally bought the ARH headers because it said it clears manual trans clutch linkage, I did go hydraulic so it didn't matter but I already had the headers, the other thing is you ask questions and get 500 different answers so I made a decision and that was that. these headers are a nice piece, But pricey

Which p/n did you purchase? Let us know about clearances if you're up to it (spark-plug & install related).
And.... Installed pics if possible. I'd really like to see how low they are in relation to the chassis since the car I'm seeking headers for is lowered 3" in front.

I have afr 195 heads with angle plugs and they fit very well. starter is a little tight had to do a combo install to make it work but a stock oil pan I think would eliminate a lot of my issues, I did trim the lower a arm bracket but again my oil pan created issues, I bought 1 3/4" g body header the part number idk right now but like I said before the old a body rh header with a gbody non a/c would be perfect
