Have a mid sixty,s M - 22 that sticks in 4 th gear once the car is driven about 10 or 12 miles , I have had it in and out trans shop 3 times still same thing . It will shift fine when cold in and out of all gears . But once it gets warm it hangs in 4 th . I have had a lot of 4 speeds over the years , never had one do this ! Anyone have any ideas ? Shifter and linkage are good and did not have this problem to begin with ! It was making roaring noise in third , decided to just have rebuilt , all new bearings and sychro,s , gaskets and main shaft ,

That's a new one on me. Usually the problem is popping out of gear, not staying in. In 4th gear the entire input and output shaft are locked together resulting in a 1:1 ratio. I guess I would suspect the shifter fork and splined collar that moves the synchronizer assembly out of engagement.

Tell them stop being cheap you paid for a rebuild so the need to rebuild it not just change a piece here and there like 90% of transmission shops.
I love when I use to call a trans shop and ask how much to rebuild a 350 and they would say depends whats wrong with it
I would ask WTF does that have to do with it if you are rebuilding the trans you are rebuilding everything not just parts of it.
Oh so tell them replace the sleeve

Steve that's Paul Cangialosi. He is a manual trans guru. I have his rebuild book and I looked for this issue. Nope- no reference to that. I have never heard of it not coming out of 4th.
I have seen a few of his videos and he sure knows those transmissions........for this problem I'm wondering if when it is stuck in 4th if the car is shut down will it come out of 4th....
that why I am asking when it is stuck in 4th if it can be shifted out of 4th when the engine is turned off
