I bought a old state truck from a DOT auction a few years ago. It was a 95 half ton two wheel drive with a straight six. I thought it would get decent mileage. Boy was I wrong. 14 with overdrive. My 92 extacab long box 4x4 chevy with oversized tires and a mild built 350 got the same. My diesel gets 15. That is the main reason we don't drive it unless we need it. In my mind you buy a truck because you need a truck, not as a commuter vehicle. I work and beat my trucks and hotrod my cars.

This thing has 3.55 gears in it; it's got overdrive, but it's absolutely gutless in OD so if I hit even a slight uphill grade, much less try to pass, I've gotta downshift into 4th.

Add 165,000 miles of wear, the aerodynamics of a cinder block, and my heavy right foot and 12 MPG isn't too bad.

I'm surprised to hear it's gutless in OD, you have that weird transmission with the short 5th gear. Then again, my friend's truck had 4.10s and I think an extra upper overload leaf. His truck was a real weird one, had stuff I never knew they put on half tons.

I'm in central NC if you need me to start searching for ya down here... just send meet the specifics you're looking for...
example at a small dealer:
Marketplace - 2011 Ford F150 XL ext cab long bed | Facebook
I love my '09 with the 2 valve 4.6... not fast, standard cab, short bed, auto, rubber floor instead of carpet, but 151k and no real issues other than minor brake and emissions issues...

Appreciate that Darin. I'm still not 100% sure exactly what I'm gonna do. If I do wind up pursuing anything more than 4 or 5 years old, a trip down south is probably my best bet.

I'd highly recommend doing so... I've got 152k on my F150 now, driven it every winter, and still not a spot of rust or fluid leaks of any kind. anywhere.
