Im have a hard time trying to identify what heads and what year this engine is #3955582 front of the block. there is a 59 stamped in the back by bellhouseing and there is a A6 stamped next to the head. other than that there are no more numbers. its a old 350 rocket im told.....came out of a 77-79 cutlass but doesn't seem to check out.. Want to double check before I buy it....Thanks for the help

That's a pre 77 block, can't tell ya anymore than that, what heads are on it? If it has #8's 73-76, 7A 72, 7's 71 (71&72, I could have these two backwards), 6's 70, 5's 68/69, (assuming it has its original heads). May narrow it down a little, not sure how to pinpoint an exact year. The number will be located next to the #1 and the #8 spark plug hole, you can't miss it.

According to 422.com it's 68-70 block. Which means that it would have num 5 heads if the engine has the original heads on it. Thanks for the links

Do you have the casting numbers for the heads as well? There should be a six-digit number on top of the middle exhaust ports, and as Oldsmoletick said, a number at the front of the head (if looking at the driver's side head). That will tell you which heads you have, rated chamber size, valve size, etc...

Check the passenger-side head as well.

Head #'s should tell you the year, if they haven't been changed. The 68-76 used the same casting #'s.

Most all the bolts are the same between the 307 and 350. However, if your 350 is a '76 or earlier block, then it has 7/16" head bolts. '77 and later Olds engines had 1/2" bolts.
