Hey all thought i would reg here and see if i can get any if all the info that i might need on a build that we are busy with .... we bought a pontiac grand prix from a scrap dealer that was just about to crush it .... the car is still in good nick just missing some parts but other than that a complete vehicle ....

so i hope you could assist me in telling me if we have a 79 SJ or a 80 G series as on all the sites and places we visit we get different answers and info on the vehicle ...

welcome from Canada. S.Africa is a beautiful place from all the pics my friends have shown ( they grew up just outside Capetown )

Very little changed between the 79-80 model year as they were almost identical. You should be able to tell by the VIN and /or door tag as to what year car you have.

Post some pics

welcome, it's nice to have people from different places in the world on this site. It goes to show people aren't really different no matter what part of the globe they are from. To your question I always though the 301 was the standard engine in an SJ

hey guys, im IronMax's other half. I actually bought the car to fix it up so that our son can have something to drive around with when he is old enough. Although IronMax does not believe me at the moment, let's just say that Micheal is only 18 months now so plenty of time for me to play with it.

We have identified by the VIN number that the car is a 1980 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2 door Coupe with the removable top glass which makes it look like a T-top. It's also not an SJ. The car is as original as you can get with standard rims and tires still on the car and the original motor and exhaust.

It is unfortunate that the current motor has seen it's days and we have to throw in another motor and box. The rims have unfortunately seen the end of their lifespan and have hairline cracks running through them.

As for the interior I would want to keep it as original as possible and have already sourced some of the parts that are missing and will be restoring the seats to their former glory.

As for pictures will upload soon

Well there has been loads of work since the initial post .... nose is completely stripped the rest of the body has been sanded as well ,... we found that who ever tried to restore the body went the easy rout and used loads of bondo .... ( filler) so we have sanded down as much as what we could and are in the process of working with what we have from there .... the body has the usual rust spots as any old gal will have lower part of the doors but nothing major that needs to be cut out and replaced ..... and yeah i agree when it comes to cars nobody is too far apart or different ... we all share the same passion for cars some just on different levels than other ....

And i foresee us ordering loads of parts from Gbodyparts.com all we hope for is that it could be shipped to SA since there are no parts available here. Thus far we are now number 4 of known Pontiac Grand prix owners of the 1979 to 80 year model ....

Welcome to the site.

Doug

So this afternoon decided to tackle the interior and remove the square carpet some person has decided to glue and pop rivet to the floor. Before we bought the car we had a look at the floor and it seems that major repair was done since it had red oxide all over and even the pedals got some "treatment"

After ripping out the house carpet we found the floor with only minor damage, obviously where the pop rivets and screws have made little holes and a rust spot behind the passenger seat

the identification plates are still on although worn out

Rims

Door cards for passenger side intact but the window has been broken

Seats original but as stated the carpets i have ripped out

Front nose stripped
