Hiya all.
I just found this site. I have an 82 Cutlass Supreme I bought and started workin on a few months ago. My first GM, although I did work on and drive my brothers 71 and 84 Cutlasses. I am currently living in Kuwait, so most parts I need I rely on Ebay. There is a huge junkyard I have found 1 Cutlass I have been gettin some parts from and some older GM's here and there. I would love to go to a lower gear around 3.90's. What is common that I can search the junkyard for? I need the most direct swap as possible as I work under a metal shade on the sand and basic hand tools. Thanks all

welcome and your not going to find any g body with anything greater than a 3:73 gear set and those can be hard to find as they only came in the olds 442's if I remember right and a select few monte ss's

Welcome!

Your best bet is if you can find a Monte SS, and just swap the whole axle.
'83-'84 had 3.42's, '85-'88 had 3.73's.
Otherwise you'll have to check the axle stampings or the RPO codes of the cars to see what gear set they came with, and maybe you'll luck out and find something. Unfortunately, most of these cars had shitty 2.41's or even worse.

is there a list of what codes are what gears and how can you tell if the rear is posi just by lookin at it?

Also, if you take the rearend out of a montess or GN, make sure to grab the rear sway bar. You'll be glad you did

I got a line on a rear out of a 86 mc ss but I want to know what to check to make sure the rear is good before I buy it
