We landed in Sydney about three hours ago. 14 hours difference between here and east coast. Very first car we got in was a 2012 Caprice for the taxi ride to the hotel LOL can't wait to see what we end up renting at the end of time here to drive to Brisbane!

Pedals are the same. So is the shift pattern. Even the turn signal lever is thoughtfully in the right place. Don't forget, though - clockwise at a roundabout...

I hope the architect helps pay some of the builder's bill for catching the design error and rework...

Don't worry, be Ozzie.

Well, made it to Sydney after 38 hours of travel. Today is Monday October 7th, and Labour day over here so most places are closed. Going to wander into the main part of the city using the ferry. This is the building on campus we'll be working in for the next month.

And my wife sent me a pic. They got the insulation and wire cut for the basement floor. Looks like the weather will be gorgeous back home for pouring concrete. Low 60's and sunny.

Looks good but a few questions..
What are the two large round holes in the insulation for ? If the tall opening is for a walk out entry door shouldnt the insulation be much lower than the bottom of the opening ? Or do they float it even to the bottom ? Or is it something other than a door ?
What goes between the bottom plate and the cement walls ? And whats the framework on the walls for ? Never saw anything like that downstate but I know houses are built differently in other areas.
Just curious.

Large round holes are where the "footers" for the posts that will hold up the center beam thru the middle of the house in the basement. Wood supports were a catwalk used when filling the walls with concrete. Opening for the door was way oversize to account for the floor and insulation. Not sure what you mean when you say bottom plate and the cement walls.

The bottom plate is the 2x6 that all the studs get attached to. In other words, the bottom of the wall. Here its treated lumber. My house was lifted back in the early 70s and theres a run of copper flashing between the cement and first plate. I think it was called a termite shield back in the day but Im not sure if thats the correct term. I think new homes down here have to have the wood framing strapped with metal ties to the cement walls. Rafters have to be strapped too. Hurricane ties. Adds quite a bit to the cost.
