Evening

I need to change the gas tank on my 79 Cutlass Cruiser. The car was originally a diesel, now sporting av 350 Olds VIN-R gasoline. The tank and lines are original.

Are there different gas tanks for diesel and gasoline? Size, mounting or straps perhaps? I know the diesel have a third return line since it's present on mine but blocked off.

Thanks

The filler neck hole is different, the diesels are larger. Other than that, the tanks seem to be the same.

Don't know if this answers your question, but I have the original diesel tank in my Cutlass although it is nowadays equipped with a 350 gasoline engine.
So you don't have to change it unless it's leaking..
The return line is blocked off. I guess the tanks should be pretty much identical.

Thanks for the input.

The tank is starting to leak and needs replacement. I want to change it to the gasoline tank if possible, since I'm all about getting rid of the diesel history of my car. Are the sending units also cross compatible?

No parts place was able to answer this for me, so here I am. And considering the cost of a new tank shipped to Norway I don't want to order something that doesn't fit... again.

I actually replaced the sending unit last year because the connecting pipes were so rusty that there was no sense in using the old unit.
I ordered the unit through my local part dealer but I have no idea if there is any difference between dsl and gas.
He just told me to measure the diameter of the connecting pipes and inform him before he ordered. And the right one arrived.

Ordered part GM704A as a replacement tank. The parts place guy on the other hand could not find it for me, so I had to Sherlock some at RockAuto myself. When I told him this must be it, he said he didn't agree.

Did I just educate the parts place? Or was I mistaken?

I ordered 2 tanks for a gas wagon at rock auto, if that is the part number for it, then it is right. The diesel tanks have a different filler neck hole, to allow for the larger diesel pump nozzle. Allot of today's parts guys only know what the computer tells them.
