The difference between the gauge style scanmaster with Bluetooth and the older original style scanmaster was pretty insignificant I figured it was worth it (like $10). I definitely was under the impression that I needed a Scanmaster for sure, just to be able to easily check the millivolts on all the sensors and check malfunction codes. Will be useful I think. I guess maybe the power logger may not be needed but people were suggesting it.
I have very little time to work on the thing unfortunately.
I have to replace the brake pads and rotors and tires at the very least for safety, maybe other things once I get into it.
Still need to break out my compression tester, my friend has a cooling system pressure tester I'd like to check that out too, to feel better about the overall health of the engine.
I know this car is going to be a money pit.
Yes, you need a scan master to monitor and tune your turbo-car, and then later on, once you get it running correctly you can use these more expensive tools for fine tuning, if you need to. You need to avoid detonation by making sure your fueling is adequate which is monitored by the scanmaster's O2 readout. Once you get it running OK, only rarely will you find you have a malfunction code, also monitored by the scanmaster. So, all you need is a scanmaster. You bought a car that needs to be brought up to snuff. I'm sure the price you paid for the car reflected that. Spending $600 rather than just $200 for a scanmaster is, in my opinion, putting the cart before the horse.
