Just out of curiosity do you have a thrust bearing or some sort of thrust washer behind the cam gear, between it and the block? Also what is the cam button made of Nylon, aluminum, or roller? And where the button hits the back of the cover, is this aluminum or does it have a steal insert?
Good catch there forgot all about that. If you dont have one dont run it until you do. I used the comp cams billet set with roller thrust bearing. You are grinding the block away otherwise.

Really? Is this just because of the roller can? So I need to pull the can gear and put in a thrust bearing?

Yes. With a roller cam it tends to walk in and out of the block. Unlike a flat tappit where the cam lobes are machined to push the cam inward. The cam button pushes back and by doing so it jams the cam gear into. The block. Thats why endplay on the cam is crutual.

So the noise may be my block getting eaten by the can gear?

Vise versa. I would deff go that route an check

I'll pull the water pump and can cover and check it

I have run these timing sets from Summit before with great success. They're not expensive at all and are good quality, you can see the torrington bearing in the link pic. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sme-7000 On the back side of the cam gear there is actually a slight recessed area with a lip to hold the bearing in place, i usually apply a little Vaseline to the bearing to help hold it there during assembly. After you check the block and back of the cam gear I would cut open the oil filter to see what if any debris is in it. It may have caught everything and not gotten to the bearings. Good luck man.

I have not seen a timing chain set come with the thrust button or Torrington bearing, on my Olds motor it was a kit I got from Mondello. You have to have a bearing or at least a bronze wear plate behind the cam gear, and the button set to specs to keep the cam walk to a minimum.
