Sorry for the basic quesiton, but I am at a loss on which way I should go.

I have a non-posi 442 rear end and want to convert to a posi unit. How complicated is that or should I just take it to a drivetrain specialist?

You'll need a 3 series posi carrier and you won't need to take it to specialist to switch out the two carriers. Just make sure you keep the shims on each side of the carrier in place. Switch the crown gear from the open the carrier to the posi carrier. The bolts for the crown gear are left handed threads (90 lbs). Install the posi carrier using the same shims (which should fit) that was used for the open. (Bearing cap bolt 55 lbs) As long as the shims fit as before I would check the backlash just to make sure and if it's within specs put the cover back on and fill it up.

As to how difficult it is: If you're relatively familiar with using a ratchet, can swing a hammer, and don't mind getting fairly dirty, the process isn't too hard. You should read up on how to do it and familiarize yourself with the steps several times. It's fairly important that you set the rear up tight and with precision or you'll regret it. fortunately, as long as you know the specs and can follow simple directions and do simple addition and subtraction, you can complete the swap fairly easily.

Theres an example of a pretty good set of instructions to study.
