It was a joke about that douchebag's new fuel economy regulations and what we will all be forced to buy in the near future because of it.

I'm pretty sure much tightend CAFE laws where passed 2-3 years ago?... it cut the production of the RWD impala, RWD monte, and pretty much killed everything else except the camaro that was based on the GM Z-body platform

I LOVE top gear. Always like thier tests they have and they manage to make it halarious. The only thing I dont like about it is that they call Americans stupid constatly it seems. I wish there were more shows like Top Gear.

Actually, the new regs were passed a few days ago. They say that by 2016 CAFE is something like 27mpg for trucks and 38mpg for cars.

So how many years has this been in play... surely more then the last couple of months? are you sure the you have the MPG right, GM cut the production of the hummer in '08 becuase it was hindered the overall standard avg that must be maintained not to pay the fine

I will find the links and post them up

2008 is the year that the EPA changed the way it tested fuel economy. The new test is much more conservative and lowered the rated economy about 3-4mpg on average over identical 2007 models. The new changes I was referring to were all over the tech blogs this week. Here's a link for you.

As for what a Kei car is, here's the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kei_car

I found this or something similar in a bunch of articles
For 2009 car models, the industry has actually averaged 32.6 mpg, well above the existing 27.5 mpg standard.
Increasing the over all average 4 MPG over 5 years shouldn’t be hard, I doubt it will be the end of the vette and similar since they actually produce similar MPG to there other cars and since it goes by production numbers and units sold I don’t see them changing it much. I do see the possibly of re-birth of GM’s using turbo's. My turbo 3800 should lay down 300+whp (no dyno yet) with a below 13 second QTR and still manages get the same MPG (if not better) as those others that are stock

All in all we should have started something similar 30 years ago when we had a gas shortage, the time line is really short but the numbers for cars is manageable, I’m not so sure about how full size trucks are gonna make it in that time
