Oil pressure wires V6 to V8

Doesn't the electric choke tie in with the oil pressure switch?

It does tie in with the low pressure oil fail safe switch. The only way I found that out is I was cleaning up the wiring and cut out that plug and found I had no power to the choke after that.

It shouldn't. The choke wire should always be hot while the key is in run.

Sorry, but the electric choke wire on the V6 DOES run through the oil pressure switch (for non-gauge pack cars). This prevents the choke from being heated unless the engine is actually running. Otherwise, leaving the key in the RUN position would prematurely heat the choke coil. Cars with gauges used the field wire from the alternator to activate a choke relay, since the gauge pack sending unit did not have a provision for a second wire.

Joe, thanks for the explanation, I mistakenly thought that switch was a kill switch in case of low oil pressure.

Ahhh...

I'm glad you started this post Safariwagon. I too switched from a v6 to a v8, but I tucked away the 2 wire sensor and ran a remote one.

I had to go and check. Actually, according to my diagrams, you are correct, somewhat. It does run through the oil pressure switch on 77-84 models. However, it doesn't on 85 and later models without gauges. So I guess we're both right (and wrong).

Just take a jumper wire and ground out one wire at a time. One of the WILL lighte the oil pressure light. Go get a light only sensor and screw it into the block. Hook the correct wire to the block. I am using one off a 74 Dodge Dart w/318 in my 84 cutlass. Works great.

a little off topic, but figured id take advantage of the topic. i'm converting to a ralley pac. I had the v6 and just adapted the oil pressure when i switched to the olds v8. i just got the oil sending unit for the ralley cluster, how should i wire it??
also how should i wire the choke?

According to oldsgmail: Oil Pressure Gauge=Tan at the back of the cluster. should i just hook up the tan wire to my new sending unit then?

thanks guys

Does anyone have the location of the switch for an 87 buick v6? my oil pressure light does not come on and I've changed the bulb. Thanks
