I need to press an oil pump pickup tube into a Jeep pump. The tube is 5/8" just like a SB Chevy. I see the Melling and Sealed Power tools going for between $50- $100. But they clamp around the tube and are probably the best option. Then there are the ProForm tools that look like a crowfoot wrench and go for less than $20. What do you guys use? Or is there a workaround?

I've always just used a crows foot of the proper size and whatever length extension I needed and tapped in place with a hammer working around as needed to get it in straight.

That sounds like a plan. Thanks Jim.

after I get the tube in place and mock it up with the pan so I know it's set up properly I braze the tube to the pump so it will never vibrate loose

I tack weld my Pontiac pumps. I read that a schmear of Permatex Aviation is all you need, just to assure no air leaks. I think that will work since this particular pickup has an arm that gets held in place by the pump mounting bolt. In fact I thought the pump tube was in solidly because the bolt holds it so tightly. But it turns out the pump hole was too big and the fit was loose. Since the tube was not driven in ever, I am re-using it on the new correct pump.

I did what Jim suggested and it worked perfectly. I wrapped some duct tape around the tube for grip and to protect it. Then I slid the 5/8" crowfoot wrench on and used an old broken 3/8" extension on that. I first schmeared some Permatex Aviation on the end for a good seal. Then I gently tapped it down with a small hammer to seat it. The mounting tab lined up perfectly with the long pump mounting bolt. Thank goodness it went right the first time because the manual says if you disturb the seated tube at all then you junk it and get another. Don't worry about the vise. It is just a third hand steadying the pump- no pressure on it. Thanks Jim!
