The 400 would bolt to a universal transmission, as would any common GM V8. Just make sure you have the right torque coverter for the application. Can you post pics of the trans? That way we can see the bellhousing and know for sure and not end up giving you bad advice.

i would but it is still in the car and where it is sitting would not me a good place to craw under it

Put a 268h comp cam in it (it's listed as a 350-455 cam, but will work in a 301), duals, rebuild the carb, and tune up. I did this to a 301 years ago in a GP. With 3.73s and a 4-speed the car was quite quick. But there is a big problem with 301s. The heads flow so bad, that they won't rev over 4400RPM (I think, give or take a few hundred). So, that's something to remember. I think I had a top speed of about 110km. But it was a good running and sounding engine. the only reason I got rid of it was because the car was to rusty.

I wouldn't put alot of time/money into a 301. If you just wanna get it going to run/drive that one thing. But if for any reason at at you plan on pulling it, I'd put something better in it. (350, 400, 455 to stay pontiac or maybe even a chevy)

yea for now i would like to keep the 301 in there because i do have another project and i dont want to get over my head so i would like to get it running and drive it

Just remembered, the 301 is narrower than other Pontiac engines. The bigger engines still bolt right in no problem, but an aftermarket intake is a no go.

I'd say just a good tune up, clean fluids and call her good. How long has it been sitting?
