Longer intake runners equal better torque production. Olds has a wider intake compared to the sbc. Look at the design of the sbc TPI runners, for a good example. Yes, there are other factors but it does make a difference.

The width of the intake is not an indication of the internal length of the runners. More to the point, the fraction of an inch difference is irrelevant on a stock type intake. Keep in mind that an Olds 350 has a significantly shorter stroke and larger bore than a Chevy 350. That's a significantly greater effect.
 
The Olds 350 is a lot wider, we will agree to disagree. The rest of the package makes a difference too, obviously.
