OLDS OLDSMOBILE Oil pump Choice...???

Im asking about strictly Olds engines

I heard they suffer from slow drain back issues

Surely there are mods to enhance drain back? My Cadillac engine has holes opened up and polished in the heads and a couple new ones drilled in the lifter valley for that very reason.

Unfortunetly I just learned about the drainback issues....after I assembled the bottom end

Washer adds pressure

it does add pressure but it will add some volume.....I know a SBC will have no problem with a higher volume pump but I don't know about an Olds. Fords have problems trying to drive a high volume pump.

I run a stock pump in my 455 with larger clearances than I have ran on any engine I ever built and I have 0 issues I deburred the block and slightly opened up the drain back holes the thing I think that makes a difference in my engine are the back cut cam bearings it adds a restriction to the upper end and also places the oil holes in a much better place giving the camshaft a better life

A lot of people think the Olds oiling is better than some selling restrictors want you to believe. Remember you don't have a huge, heavy 4.25" stoke 455 crank with 3" main journals with 2.5" rod journals. You have 2.5" mains with 2.125" rod journals, lighter than stock pistons and a Halo. Keep it below 5500 and you should be good. I assume it was balanced after the new pistons?

It's a myth that probably stemmed from running molasses for motor oil. Open the clearances a blonde one, use normal oil weight, and let'er eat (Chevies for breakfast).

Yeah, Cutlassefi warned against using 20W50 in a motor. I picked up a bunch of VR1 20W50 for a good price at Walmart. I am planning mixing with 5W30 old SL rated Quaker State Defy in my 350 and going with a roller cam in the 424 as long as a cam blank can be found. It is getting to be a problem for Olds. What are your clearances and which cam did you choose?
