Soon time to renew the stickers on the fleet and I am considering Historic Plates for the Monte. In the research I have done they have the same stipulations as the classic car insurance ( no malls, commute, ect.. ). So other than the savings in plate costs ( $98 for regular vs $18 for historic ) are there any other benefits or drawbacks ? I put between 5000 & 10000 kms on the car each year if that matters.

I am interested in the answers to this as well. I have a buddy that just got historic plates for his '66 Buick. I will ask him for his input but if you can save $80 bucks, why not?

(OREG 628)
“historic vehicle” means, a motor vehicle that,
(a) is at least 30 years old,
(b) is operated on a highway in parades, for purposes of exhibition, tours or similar functions organized by a properly constituted automobile club or for purposes of repair, testing or demonstration for sale,
(c) is substantially unchanged or unmodified from the original manufacturer’s product, and
(d) does not have attached to it year-of-manufacture plates

I don't like the sound of "C"...

OK GP, I read that too. AC&D I got covered. The unclear part for me is portion B/ If for instance I am pulled over in Cambridge at 2pm on a Tuesday and I live in Brampton ( obviously not near a car show or a local service centre ) will I get a ticket ? Or like Saturday night after the Queensway car show I hung out at a friends until 2am and I got stopped at a DUI check driving home ?

I dunno if the historic plates will draw more attention from the po-po or not at those hours. And if they do are they going to give me a citation ? I would say 75% of the cars in the Woodbridge show last night had historic plates but they are garage queens.

I built my car to look like its orig. Orig wheels with the biggest brakes I could fit. painted my motor factory 70's GM blue, hollow cat, and even run the orig air cleaner so 95% of the po-po and MTO will think its the orig 305 with a slightly louder exhaust

there are forms where Ontario drivers have had their historic plates confiscated by the police when it was obvious they were just driving . It's up the cop if they stop you driving with historic plates. I would also suggest reading the small print on the insurance to see if the coverage is voided if you are not complying with the laws. There has to be a reason the classic insurance is so relatively cheap

Dont underestimate the MTO like that. You're naive if you think a hollow cat will fool them.

If you have AC&D covered, i wouldnt worry about B. There is always a show or parade on somewhere, and you can be on your way home from an out of town one at 2am.

Like GP said, its the insurance you need to worry about. If you read the fine print in insurance, they usually have mileage limitations (unreasonable ones), you cant drive your car to work, and there are millions of stipulations. Chances are if you describe your scenario to the company, they will tell you its not insured in that circumstance if you were involved in a wreck. <<== Sounds like you know all this already from your original post.

The reason historic insurance is so cheap is they dont let you drive the car. I wouldnt worry about the plates, i'd worry about the insurance.

actually the insurance side I am as comfortable with as I can be with an insurance company ( that need another thread on its own ).

When I first set up with the adjuster I told him I was leery about the Classic Insurance and the payout in the event of a loss. I explained to him that this was no garage queen and I planned on driving it. We went thru every scenario that I currently use the car for and he was mostly OK with it. And he even schooled me on the "what it" scenarios; so they know we are playing the game.

Anybody else have classic insurance ?? What do you guys do to insure your car ?

I would not want to take the risk of having my insurance voided and having to deal with the consequences and I'm sure the people in the other cars would agree.. I also would not trust what an adjuster told me as the policy with the restrictions is what is relied on. I'm sure if something had happened the adjuster would quickly deny he/she said anything. There is only a few companies in Ontario that offer silver wheels or classic insurance and it is very clear that that insurance is only valid for the trips to and from a show and to have the car repaired. There is a reason the plates are marked "historic" so the car can be identified that it has restricted use. If paying $100 for classic insurance allowed the insured to use the car at will everyone would have historic plates as soon as the car acquired that status.
