oops, made my ride too firm. what should i do?

Replace your steering setup and cv joints and you should get a phenomenal improvement in overall control. Don't drive in winter conditions with the way it is right now until you do. Summer conditions is obviously fine; whole different ball game
 
It's easy to check to see if you have any play in the steering shaft. Don't start changing parts trying to chase an unknown problem. There is lots of things that can make some noise when you run into a pothole. It could even be a simple as your hood needing adjustment. If you have a shop that you can trust that does wheel alignments I would take it in there and have them go through the front end
