For reference, we had a guy come do top and bottom of a 70/72 Buick GS hood last week....$350

Now the owner of said hood can REALLY see what a rotten POS it is.....he paid $800 for it! Could have bought a Glastek for that
Yup I seen one on ebay ..was it a yellow hood?

Put it on a grinder and Do! Work straight to bare metal!.is what I use at work

I second that! If you're on a tight budget this is the method to use. I used a $15 Harbor Freight 4.5" grinder and 3 of these abrasive wheels to strip 2 fenders, door and trunk lid on my 75 Laguna. It makes a mess but its a lot of bang for the buck. But if you can afford it, dustless blasting is the way to go to do a whole car.

For budget, I'm definitely with the abrasive discs & grinder. I'd have a better quality higher amperage grinder, which you can always find other uses for. One of mine is a bosch with variable speed, which can be useful. Do it outside with a fan blowing at least some of it away from you, a dust mask, ear protection , & my preference of a clear full face shield & go to town on it.
Like any removal method , don't stay in 1 spot too long for heat control. Some pads are better quality than others. Never used the h.f. discs & not sure if their life span per dollar is better than the more expensive pads or not. May look into mail ordering some.
Some paint is much harder to remove, such as old Imron & will eat up any abrasives. Old lacquers are pretty soft.

Personally I think the dustless system is a little over rated. You're paying for advertising of half the car shows on tv. Dennis is a cool guy, but a total advertising sellout. Biggest issue of use is it doesn't take away the need for a skilled user and still makes a mess. Pressure, not heat is the biggest warper from blasting & improper use will still cause damage.

Using that grinder disc, how hard is it to level out the metal with the primer? Is it just a matter of using an extra coat?

Also if I do get it down to bare metal can I just hit it with a spray can of primer as a temporary coat to stop rust until I am ready to paint the complete car? Or is there a better method?

I'm not a body guy, but you probably would want an etch primer or epoxy primer on bare metal. If you're talking about a sandable primer in a can, or even hi build primer, they are permeable, meaning water can wick trough them and cause rust. An epoxy (I'm using PPG DP90) will keep moisture off, then your hi build primer to block.
