While pulling the front sway bar I saw this on the block. Does it mean anything?

This the casting number you are talking about? Kinda behind the bypass hose. This is all I can see. 557752

77-80 Olds 350

well thats cool.. are they decent motors?

thanks for all the help guys. this general motors stuff is all new to me and i'd be lost without the help.

Its better than a 307

If you decide to build it

That casting number is for late 70s 350. It appears they took a 350 short block and put it in as those valve covers still have the 307 VIN 9 decals on them (PKS is what's on my 85 442 as well) and the engine test stand stamp on the front. The oil cap is from 1985 as well. If you look at the carb number on the back driver side of it, if it's an original carb, it should be a re-stamped 84 H/O carb, number 17085554, with the first 5 all fugged up looking because it was stamped over the original 4. They probably re-used the 307 VIN 9 intake because in 85, the A4 intake shared the same large rectangular ports and bolts right up.

Interesting as the rough shape it's in, it still has the radiator emission decal on it and what appears to be a PARTIAL ECM decal on top of the HVAC unit. They put the ECM decals on there as well as the ECM so the tech wouldn't have to tear into the kick panel to get any ECM info off of it. Except those decals weren't weather proof and didn't hold up well over time. Very very few remain that's readable. Still have mine, but it's not readable any longer.

AFAIC, the SPID info seals it for me. It's a W42 (442) through and through, and too bad it's not a G80.
