okay on my 83 cutlass i have a problem with exhaust smoke...when i start the car it takes about 30 seconds then greyish smoke starts coming out of the tailpipes once the car idles for about say 10 minutes the smoke goes away...I ruled out the head gasket or cracked cylinder...Im thinking piston rings but if it were the piston ringswouldnt the smoke be constant and not go away ...could it be a pcv valve or a carb problem..to me the smoke smells like gas

Bad PCV valve or too much oil?

you know where the pcv valve is located on a 83 cutlass???isnt it the thing coming from the master cylinder ?
ignore that last question i located it...seems good it rattles

x2 on the valve seals.

If you don't want to play guessing games, do a leak down test. If you don't have access to compressed air you might have to pay someone to do it. Over the years I've learned to invest more into troubleshooting than throwing money at a problem.

Read both pages of this article if you want to know more.

Or just check your sparkplugs, one should be worse than the rest singling out the bad valve seals. also did you pull off your vacumm modulator line to the trans at the back of the carb to see if maybe its pullin transmission fluid threw it. Could be that when your shutting the car down and it sits that trans fluid is bleeding past the modulator o ring and when you start it the vacum pulls it up to the carb hince the delay in the smoke. Best way to check is let it sit and before you start/drive it pull the line off at the trans and see if fliud drips out.

I had a similar problem with my '86. However, my cutlass has almost no cadillac converter on it and produces more smoke. I believe that the extra smoke when you start the car is the extra gasoline burning that was left in the carburetor after the last time the car was running.
