My research gave me the following:

A stock 7.5" rearend on a g-body (83 in my case) has 26 spline axles. You can use a carrier from and 82-87 s-10 since it uses the same spline correct?

Did all s-10 blazer 4x4's have a posi carrier? There is 3 4x4 blazers at the local 'yard an '87 an '86 and I don't know about the other one.
I'm just wondering if all 3 of these would have a posi carrier and gears I could possibly use.

I know this question is always being answered, but I couldn't really find a clear answer, just info from here and there... just want to make sure.

Posi is always an option.

I think Blazer's hid the RPO label either in the glove box, or maybe somewhere else... Look for G80, or if it still has a tag on the rear end cover. Be careful that you don't get one with 28 spline axles, unless you plan on upgrading those as well.

Ok, so G80 is posi. Don't plan on upgrading axles, looking for a quick swap.

I also heard s-10s used the same codes as far as gears so I'll print out a sheet and hope for the best.

Also, what's the best gearing for mostly a street setup, but still gets up when needed and gets descent mileage? I know those two don't go hand in hand

overdrive trans? if not i like my 3.42's

with overdrive maybe a 3.73

The real question is do you plan to take highway trips with it? If no, then i would go for 3.73s.

Olds motors have enough low end torque to not need that steep of a gear.
The only reason the 3.73's are still in my car is because they're the original equipment. Otherwise, I'd swap to a 3.23.
Of course, someday I hope to be able to afford to go through my 200-4R, in which case I'd like to have the 3.73's.

performance posi or truck loacker?

I think the real question here is do you want a Performance limited slip or a truck locker?

The posi /limited slip /locker found in the s-10 and most all trucks are Gov lock limited slip units...THEY ARE NOT MADE for performance type driving applications...Like hole shot burn outs and winding turns... They are for trucks pulling stuff out of steep terrain and mud water etc.

Gov lock unit engage and disengage when they detect slippage in the difference between the to wheels spinning and will do this when least expected causing and abrupt clunk and even at high torque levels causing the unit to explode. They are low speed operation devices....such as : stuck in the mud, slippage in the water or on ice etc.

A performance unit is ALWAYS ON it never turns on and off. It will always be engaged with only axle force over coming clutch pressure making the transition from turns etc much more smooth...the true tracs are even better at this operation keeping your car or truck in more full control in turns and winding roads.

SO do think out your needs for posi and buy the correct unit for the job. Jim

I would post pictures if thus site had a browser system to make it easier to post pics.

Monzaz, I got a 84 regal w/350 motor thanks 4 clearing that up 4 me. My question is it better 2 put a whole performance posi rearend in or put a performance posi carrier? Don't know da difference so please clear that up 4 me. Thanx, Squinky 🙂

Blazers and S-10s have good selection of gear ratios. Check pre-'88 Camaros and Firebirds for "performance" limited-slip carriers. These are of course for the budget minded. Better options are available aftermarket but are obviously more expensive.
