What he said is correct. But Fwiw swapping the whole rear drum to drum is easier & far less problematic. No special tools shims or know-how either. It may even be cheaper if you can find salvage yard MCSS. Also if you do tear apart the rear & swap in a posi an upgrade to 28 spine axels would be a good upgrade for not too much money should you happen to find a 7.5/7.625 rear with a 28 spine posi. (More likely in an s-10.)
I will probably just replace the whole damn thing. I'm not sure if this rear will take the new power. I'm afraid to find out I'm right too. I couldn't tell you the last time it was serviced either. 78??
the problem I encountered with the auburn 7.5 posi was the pinion gears are substantially smaller the pinion gears in an open carrier so pinions gears blew up...I'm only running about 375 hp but it's a standard so it can be harder on the rear...
if you do want to switch out your gears and carrier for a posi the shim on the pinion will 99% of the time give you the proper depth so the only thing you need to set up is the shims for the backlash which is pretty simple....the only thing I would suggest is to replace the crush sleeve...if you want to keep your gears then you only need to put the crown on the posi carrier...remember the bolts for the crown gear to the carrier is a left hand thread
Well that is halarious, but I was originally talking about welding the spider gears. I have personally never done it, or had it done, but apparently they can be welded together to create a makeshift full locker :?
