they can be and we have done it cause the track would not allow a posi or a spool...you don't actually weld the pinion gears to the side gears....you weld the a couple of valleys in in each side gear and the trick is to get it so it tight with as little play between the pinion and side gears as you can get.... When welding you have to watch out for the splatter landing on the pinion shaft cause you need to remove the shaft if you ever have to remove the axles
