BUILD THREAD Project long time coming

That was with the old motor (which I don't know what it was lol), but with a 5.3/6.0 that will cruise at 2000 and spin to 6500 your issue should be gone.

4 gears is more than enough - 6 is for.....160+

But then I'd have to change the gears in the 8.5" rear end and lose my low end launch... I want my cake and to eat it LOL
Cake and eat it too - yup, I understand. That’s what you ought to have.

Id look hard at the rebuilt, guaranteed unit or a known, correctly functioning unit.

It seems to me trying to get a t56 swapped in a gbody for cheap is futile. Most people who have a t56 want 2k or more for a beat on stock trans. They point to the price of a t56 magnum, even though they aren't the same. I figured 3-4k for a t56 from an fbody. 5-6k for a magnum. I'm sure it can be done cheaper but not by much. I've been saving for the magnum. If I get done with the car before I've got the funds, I'll put an auto in it. That is highly unlikely for me.
As nice as your car is, I assume you plan on keeping it, plus you can still drive it. I'd think the magnum is the way to go.

With the 25.5" & 3.42 combo, the 4spds 1.00 final drive yields approx 2700rpm @ 60mph.

The t56 4th gear yields 1800rpm @ 40mph. Great for inner city traffic getting to the highway.
The t56 5th yields 2160rpm @ 60. Great for merging onto the highway & local highway areas.
The t56 6th yields 2130rpm @ 75. Great for increased speeds during extended interstate highway driving.

Seems it's a pretty solid choice.

Sometimes even a blind squirrel gets a nut. Yay! Out of a 2002 Trans Am with 79k miles.
