BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Car looks amazing 👏.. i especially love the B pillar treatment. Look like one piece of glass. That 350 sounds as good as the car looks.

What mufflers are on this masterpiece?

Just stopping to make my semi annual pop in, mention amazing work and go back to my creepy build thread stalker mode. 🙂

I love to see what Donovan is up to, but his level of meticulousness is so much more than mine that I feel..................... inspired.

I don't open this thread everytime I see an update, but rather wait a couple of weeks to see what he's done - it's like binge watching a new series on Amazon Prime or Netfilx. It makes me go back 10-15 pages to re-watch the previous episodes to see how he got to where he is now (even though I've already seen it).

Keep it up D 👍

Damn, nice walk around! I love this car. Looks like the dash is in great shape all except the spot in the upper left radio/HVAC control surround. I wonder if there is a way to fix that to make it inconspicuous...

Good eye sir!
Most folks don’t catch that damage. The car was previously a theft recovery at some point in its life (steering column repaired and repainted, remnants of broken glass in the driver’s door), so I believe that’s when it got damaged. It’s not terrible, but it is noticeable if you know where to look.

Thankfully I managed to pull and stash away a mint Claret dash out of an ‘85 442 that was in the wreckers. The same 442 in fact, that donated its 8.5” 3:73 and OZ code 200R4 to Olds Cool. That particular car was very beneficial to me. 😏

The dash swap is on the list of things left to do on the car, but it’s been pretty low priority up until lately. It could possibly happen this winter.

I hope my 350 sounds that good!

Thanks Jared! Knowing you and your meticulous nature and attention to detail, I have no doubt whatsoever that it will.

Posts like this are what make this forum so damn much fun! 🤣🤣🤣
I literally laughed out loud when I read this! At any rate, thanks for stopping by and commenting, it’s always appreciated as usual. Carry on in creepy build thread stalker mode.

Thank you Mike, I genuinely appreciate the compliments. The ghost B pillar treatment is one of my favourites as well, so much so that I’ve now used it on both my cars.

Hardly a masterpiece, but would you believe 2 1/2” DynoMax Super Turbos? They provided the soft subtle rumble I was looking for, and were very reasonably priced. I had a set of MagnaFlows on before that and absolutely hated them. They rattled like the baffles inside were all broken, I couldn’t get them off fast enough. At less than 3 months old, they ended up in the circular file. I wouldn’t even give them away, absolute junk.

I’ve been quite satisfied with the Super Turbos. Soft rumble at idle, but still let you know there’s something going on under the hood at full song.
😈

Appreciate it Jim, truly.
Thanks.

Thanks guys. I’m excited and happy to finally be embarking on this next new stage in my life. It feels like it’s been forever in coming, especially given all the obstacles that have been thrown at us lately, with the whole Covid thing and whatnot.
May your life be an upward spiral from here on, amigo.

Just watched the video. That there is a pretty gnarly cam. And I like how the emblems on the fenders and trunk lid worked out.

Thank you on both accounts Quinn.
The emblems you see on there in their respective locations are as the car came with stock. The only changes I have made is to paint the lower half of the rocket logos black instead of red, kind of a “could be a special edition” sort of thing.

The cam selection was as per Comp’s recommendation at the time, biggest they suggested going with the stock D5 converter, but the 1.6 ratio roller tips do give it a little more lift in the Vortec heads.

This is the cam, nothing special really:

Spent several hours on the car on Sunday, got the intermittent AstroRoof functioning found and fixed. It turned out to simply be the switch harness pulling out of its’ connector. Doesn’t get much easier to fix than that.

Decided now that the rest of the interior and headliner (sans sun visors) is pretty much back in, I should probably give it a decent cleaning.

After completely dismantling my Rigid shop vac to start the morning with and giving it a thorough clean out, I can finally use my bad dad vacuum joke: My vacuum REALLY sucks!!!

Cleaned the insides of all the glass, spent several hours vacuuming the trunk, the front seats and all the carpet. I’ve decided I officially hate the carpet in our cars, it’s unbelievable the amount of dust and crap it can hold.

Wiped down a bunch of the interior plastics and litter bin with Fantastik, Cleaned the seat chrome with glass cleaner, and generally tried to make it look a little more presentable in the cabin:

The camera skews the colors quite a bit, in the pictures it looks like the dash, carpet and seats are all different colors, but in person they’re all very close.

Three years of sustained bodywork was not kind to the cleanliness of the interior. I still have to put a little protectant on everything, but I think it’s starting to come around now.

In other news, 2 forum members have come to my rescue and graciously DONATED a couple of headlight switch knobs to replace the original that I broke the retaining clip on. They both showed up in the mail today, thanks very much O. D. Showtime and Huen79H/O. It’s been said before but bears repeating: BEST FORUM EVER.

The new knob from Kevin was as close to mint as you can get, it’s already been installed, while the other has been tucked away as a backup in case of emergency.

I should be getting my recovered sun visors back from the upholstery shop today or tomorrow, looking forward to that. As the overall caliber of the car continues to improve, previously “adequate” items are now starting to look a little rough around the edges. That being said, I think a brand new trunk mat will be ordered soon, as well as maybe some “Cutlass” embroidered floor mats. It’s looking like another RA order might be going in soon...
🤔

I think I'll be the first one to mention the skull hanging from the rear view mirror.
Icing on the cake 🎂
Great job as always Donovan 👏
Btw great choice on the Dynomax muffs. For the money they are really a great performing and sounding muffler that is too often overlooked
