BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Good choice on the Dynomax Super Turbo's. I can't think of anyone who has them who hates them. I put a large body one on my Dakota. It even sounded Ok with the V6. Until the weight of the huge 3" tip broke the casing where the pipe goes in, I just added a hanger to support it. It sounded nearly stock inside, till I opened my window. Outside sounded very good. Now just noticeable inside and pretty loud outside. I love the Hooker Aerochamber mufflers on the 88. They are on the loud side but the very padded Brougham interior must make a difference. I moved the whole system to the 70S and drone city. Maybe because the interior is less padded and the X pipe touched the hump on the crossmember and resonated. Either way Super Turbos for the 70 with full length Chinese Stainless headers. I didn't realize they kept the dash the same through production but it is. No surprise your car was stolen, older GM's were always a target and super easy. And yes, your car is a masterpiece and the million hours spent on it to get that way proves it.

Got my sun visors back from the upholstery shop today. A big thanks to Chinook Auto Upholstery for the quick turnaround!

They recovered them with the leftover headliner material I had, plus built an entirely new card for the driver’s side.

They look pretty good...

Naturally I reinstalled them tonight, and they look soooo much better than the old ratty worn out ones I took into them:

Note the deluxe lighted vanity mirror on the passenger side. This wasn’t an option in 1980 to the best of my knowledge. The car originally came with just a simple non-covered, non-lighted mirror. I liberated this one from the wrecked 1985 442 in the junkyard that supplied so many other parts to this car.

I added the hot wire for it at the fuse box, and ran it up to the mirror when I redid the AstroRoof wiring. It grounds through the mounting screws.

If you really wanna get nit-picky, some of the stitching is a little crooked and the material on the passenger side visor doesn’t run in the same direction as the headliner, but whatever. They’re sun visors. Nobody ever looks at that sh*t anyways.

Thought I’d snap a quick picture of the headlight knob that Kevin graciously donated to the build while I was in there, it’s in fantastic condition. Thanks Kevin!!

Alright, onto the next thing I’ve got rattling around in my twisted brain. It might sound a little outlandish at first, but hear me out. I’m contemplating replacing the worn and faded, tattered old carpet strips on the bottoms of the door panels with this headliner material too.

I know it sounds a bit strange, but then again, having carpet on the bottoms of the door panels is kinda weird too if you think about it.
Just for sh*ts n giggles, I held a piece up to see how it would look:

Personally, I like it and think it’d work. I know it won’t be as durable, but this car won’t ever see daily driver abuse again as long as I own it. Whadda y’all think, yay or nay??

I'd say go for it. Whats the worst, gotta remove it all & go back to carpet?

True, but the foam backing on this material is a REAL PITA to get off after it’s glued. I know this from the bits I had to remove from the headliner to make room for the Velcro.

What if you attached it so you didn't have to glue the headliner fabric directly to the door panel? Like attach the head liner fabric to a thin piece of hardboard like used in your sunvisors or something similar. And attach that to the door panel. You may even be able to get creative or silly if you felt so inclined and add some sort of decorative design or script that stands out in a 3d fashion.

Now that is truly good idea. Not so much the decorative designs and 3D stuff as that isn’t really my style, but I love the idea of attaching it to something first then placing it on the doors. I could make accurate cardboard templates for them ahead of time.

Thanks!!

I didn't think you would be into the designs or 3d script but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway, if for no other reason than to be a smart *ss.🤣

I really like the Headliner material on door panels. I would assume it is durability thing but even my 70 has stupid looking carpet on the door panels. Your idea will look much sleeker👍
