And you would be correct sir! I’m getting very near having the back half of the car ready to finally prime. I didn’t want to actually “say” that, lest Murphy and his infernal laws get wind of it...

It’s been a very long road and taken a TON of time and effort to get here, but there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel. And I’m about 80% sure it’s not a train.

I’ve still got to give the driver’s side quarter extension the realignment treatment, a little attention to detail around the rear marker light, and seam seal everything up, and possibly paint the inside of the extensions first, but I’m rapidly getting there. If time and progress permits before Saturday, I would also like to get the trunk lid and filler panel stripped so that I can get them in primer at the same time, but we’ll see how that goes.
The back half of this car was in very poor condition and has required a ton of work over and above the rust and welding repairs I had to make. Once the back half is in primer, the lions’ share of the work will be done. The doors are their own issue, but once I get forward of there, the front half should go fairly quickly. There’s a couple of spots that will require repair, but overall it should be mainly stripping off the old paint and going straight to primer.

On a side note, garage day with Mike today was a bust as he was feeling under the weather and cancelled on me. But the last few times he’s been over I’ve had him working inside the rear wheel wells.
The seam sealer between the inner and outer wheel houses is crumbling and peeling away, and the 40 year old undercoat has long outlived its lifespan. The undercoat was flaking off in several areas showing the white paint underneath and generally looking terrible. Couple that with a couple spots where rust had attacked and eaten through the pinch weld flanges and it was time to address it before it gets any worse.
Chipping off 40 year old undercoat is not a particularly fun chore but we are making headway on it...
Once the last of the undercoat is gone, we’ll shift our focus to cutting out the rust and replacing it with fresh metal as well as re-seam sealing the joints.
I’ll continue to update on this as progress warrants as well.

Yeah, my 87 is only partially undercoated because they were doing it as a part of just standard dealer prep when I got over there to check out my special ordered 442. NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! So, I don't have the rust hiding under the parts they had done because the car has never seen winter much less a salted road but I have been removing what they did do as I have time.
Obviously, I haven't done anything like what you're doing but the phase you're entering is a lot like when I built our last house [geez] 25 years ago when I started all the finish carpentry and stain, applying primer and paint to the drywall, side, trim, and paint outside, etc. etc. The house or car really starts to come to [or even cooler, come back to] life at this point!

Anyways, I made good use of an extra day off and long weekend here, and Mike and I both busted *ss yesterday and today. Mike was over both days and together we really hammered down and got after it.
Yesterday Mike got the rest of the undercoating in the rear wheel wells removed and cleaned up so next time we can proceed with some rust repairs in a couple spots.
While he was working on that, I focused my attention on the last area that needed attention and a bit of bodywork: the quarter extension for the driver’s side.
The one that the car came with fit terribly, even with adjusting and tweaking the fit. I dug the one from The Brown Bomber out of storage and was quite surprised at how much better it fit right off the bat. I still ended up reworking and modifying it to get it perfect, but at least now I had something to work with.
In these pics I was building up the face of it after stripping off all the old paint, and then bolted it up to skim the outer surfaces:
At the end of the day yesterday, Mike and I both agreed we wanted to push hard for getting the past 8 months of work done so far into primer, so I was in the garage and already working by 8 am this morning.
After spending several hours masking and making sure everything was sealed up, we wiped the car down several times and shot a coat of epoxy to start things off.
Here it is after the epoxy was laid down and Mike showing his enthusiasm.

At the end of a 10 1/2 hour marathon day, and with yours truly feeling more than a little tired and beat, this was the end result after 3 coats of high build:
It’s not exactly the prettiest right now, there’s quite a few runs and sags from me pounding the material on, but it’s only primer, and I’d rather have the mil thickness to work with rather than not enough.
That’s all from me for now gents, I’m beat and off to a well deserved meal and hot shower, but it was a very good day.

It's awesome to see primer laid down over all that meticulous metal work Donovan! The body lines already look crisp, and I'm sure after blocking they will look really good when the final paint gets sprayed!!!!

Oh man. That looks so good. 6 weeks and hopefully I’ll be getting to get close to that step.
