Pros and Cons of Posi???

Come drive my 94 Olds 350 powered 4x4 with 3.73 Gov lock or 2000 Dodge Dakota with 3.92 Sure Grip in 2wd. The 94 especially is constantly sideways on our awful streets, I leave them in 4 high all the time. I will never own a 2wd again in my life.

if your not just joking around and the car is sideways all the time then with all due respect it's an issue with the driver, not the posi

There is no real downside to a limited slip rear end. Companies use non-limited slip rear ends because they are cheaper.

I know that Posi makes both wheels spin but is there any Cons to this and if not why even make non posi rear ends?

A posi traction rear end in a rear wheel drive car or truck is a bad reciepe in foul weather. When 1 wheel spins on an open carrier rear, it generally will not alter the direction of the vehicle. When both wheels spin on ice or snow, the whole back end of the car will swing out. I used to drive a 77' Cutlass Salon that had a posi rear. It was a scary drive in Michigan winters and I hated it in the snow.

While yes, this is true you just have to be aware of how your vehicle reacts and drive accordingly. I drove my '87 for years daily with the limited slip and it just took getting used to.

My truck is the same way. I wouldn't have just a 2wd anything without it at least having a limited slip/locker for bad weather. While the open carrier doesn't go sideways like a limited slip will, it also has a lot less traction too.

Pro's great for doing 2 wheel burnouts and traction
Con's you will have to replace 2 rear tires instead of 1 from all the rubber you lay on the street (im sure you can live with that)

What 'cons' to posi traction? The only 'pro' to pitching sidearm is slightly better fuel mileage on the highway. Besides that posi gives much better control. Idk what these other guys above are talking about - I had especially bad luck in turns with the cutlass and can't wait to put posi traction on it. My rwd caddy w 2.91 posi has NEVER 'lost control' or 'got sideways' because I 'didnt have 4wd' but the cutlass body-rolled right off of 3 turns in winter time causing me to nearly smack into cars worth 5-10x as much as the olds and then it was a son of a b*tch to get it back on the road too but luckily I had cardboard boxes in the trunk just in case which I had to shove under the wheel getting traction. What a nightmare I will not be driving the Cutlass in icey weather again. I would rather pay $35 for a cab than risk a $2,500 total loss by smacking into someones escalade. Posi traction is definitely better all the way around and anyone who would even try to argue different clearly does not know what they are talking about or lives in a bubble down South somewhere in a location where it snows 1-2 times a year...

I had a no slip in my Cutlass. My wife floored it in the rain, the car did a 360. Posi is more tolerable then a locker on icy or wet roads. The lockers kick but in the snow though. Our roads are sheer ice in this so called city, the Challenger is only driveable thanks to winter tires and traction control.

Really a G body should not be out on icy and salty roads in the winter, unless you want your car to turn into rust powder.

I replaced the 2.41 rear in my Regal with a posi 3.73 from a MCSS and the car doesn't seem to handle differently. Through I have better control when I do J-turns in my field.

Agree completely. I got rid of my studded winter tires for my Cutlass and put on slicks instead. Can't even get it out of the garage. It did fine with studded tires and went through snow well but did get snakey at times. Look where I live, 6 months of winter.

We get decent amounts of snow here in Buffalo. The one wheel peel action in the winter really sucks, my blazer was like that.. If you know your vehicle posi is no problem. I've had the open diff slide around just as much. It's all about the driver.

Still haven't had the nuts to take the 442 out in any snow and see how it drives with the 350 and 3.73's.. The posi in that car is nice especially for launching, and honestly if someone is worried about losing a couple mpg with the posi on one of these cars, I think its time to reevaluate some things..
