alright this is gonna sound stupid but since i haven't driven my cutlass off my street since my engine swap i haven't been able to figure this out. is the 200-4r a 4 speed automatic plus overdrive or is it a 3 speed transmission plus overdrive. how many gear will it go through if i just left it in drive i guess is what the question is?

I know this will sound stupid, but when you are counting through the gears, remember you will already be in first as it upshifts so you will only feel 3 upshifts to get you to overdrive. Yes, I had someone worried there transmission wasn't shifting right because they counted one less gear change than their transmission had. :blam:

Good point to keep in mind

I always tend to think of it as shifts. There is the 1-2 shift, 2-3 shift then overdrive option

thanks guys

i had just been reading things and people were referencing it as a 4 speed and i was like to myself i really dont think it is, im almost positive its a 3 speed plus overdrive (which im not sure if the correct terminalogy actually makes it a 4 speed) but anyways i was just wondering cuz i havent had the car over 30 or 40 yet but i can't wait till next summer when i get to whip it around town

It's called a 3 speed overdrive and when you put it in D it will go through 3 gears( 1-2) (2-3) (3-4)

On a similar note, I have thought of buying a 88 caprice with a 307 olds and a 2004r trans just for the parts. The column shifter in the caprice has 4 selections, 1,2,D,OD, but my olds has only three on the console. My question is, if I install this trans, I will probably not be able to start out in first and shift it manually, right? Just thinking about all my options...thanks!

The guy wants $350 for the motor and trans and any small items I might want before he scraps it.

You would not be able to shift down into 1st if your current transmission is a 3 speed, I have a 200r4 in my car currently and I had used a 3 speed shifter temperarily until I had bought a new shifter. It seemed to of worked fine other than not being able to drop down into first.

Sounds fine to me...Do you think the 2004r is gonna make much diff on mileage or should I just stick with the TH350 that I have already>? Some have said that it makes a for a better take off but barely noticed gas mileage diff. Others have said that the extra cost of a new crossmember and TC lock up solenoid isnt really worth it....what do you think? Thanks!
