Im looking for a pposi.rear end. i have a 383 stroker and a 350 turbo transmission this is my 1st project street car.im looking for something im able to drive 300-600 miles if i wanted to but also want to launch at a green light if a ford were to pull next to me.. im really on a tight budget soo if any one has any suggestions it would help big time...OH YEAH i FORGOT MY ELKY IS BAGGED  dont know if that would make a diffrence .

check ebay or craigslist. i got my 4.11 posi for $350. had to drive 2hours there and back, but it was worth it.

I really want something new but again im on a tight buget so a used one will do.No one will be able to tell the diff.after im done painting and throwing so chrome in it.i m looking to spend a grand but if i can get one cheaper ill be doing real good.

Hey Partner, below is a cut and paste from a post I did about a month ago. All doesn't apply to you but I didn't feel like retyping it. If your budget is $1,000 you should be in luck. I got my posi out of a Grand National for 900. Some bearings and new seals and the rearend was like new. I slipped in in my 80 ss after a good sandblasting and a coat of paint. I also went to a bone yard and found a traction bar off a grand prix for 20 bucks and what a HUGE difference it made while cornering and at the track.

Learning things is always fun, especially when it's at someone else expense. Please take it from a guy who has lived with 10 bolts for over 20 years. Stay away from them unless you plan on going with under 300HP or less. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when it blows. Even the Monte ss 10 bolts were not that strong. They had a 7.625 " ring as opposed to the 7.5 in all the other G Bodies and not ALL were limited slip (posi). The only 10 bolt worth it's weight was the one's in the Grand National. They had an 8.5 " ring and are very, very Strong! You may not remember but from 84 to 87 even the Corvette couldn't touch the G.N. at the track.
Now I'm going to caveat a few of my statement. That very same rear end also came in the Hurst Olds and the Olds. 442, unfortunately they are even harder to find just because of the limited amount that were made. If you can find any of the three aforementioned rear ends then that's what you want. They are all direct bolt ins and NO modifications need to be made. If you have a blown differential now and just need something to get the car moving then by all means throw in a standard 10 bolt like mine and save your money for the big one. If you don't plan on racing it at the track or putting some serious H.P. under the hood then the same applies. I got one you can have for free.

One small addition...the driveshaft will need to be shortened, the 8.5 is longer yoke to axle centerline.

Yup, you are exactly right. I believe I had mine cut somewhere around 7/16th or so. Had new u joints put in while they were at it.
