Hello buick guys, i have a 84 buick regal with a 350 chevy motor dual exhaust, i want a posi, what is cheaper buy a whole rear end or just change the differential. Also is a 3.73 gear ratio good for it 🙂
Haha the Buick guys will tell you to put a Buick motor in it. Cheapest and most idiot proof way is to have your local salvage do a computer search and locate a rear out of Monte Carlo SS. It will be a bolt up with either 3.42s or 3.73s. Drum to drum they are usually $225 around here. You can do it yourself with simple tools nothing really to screw up. Also a lot of times you can get the rear sway bar with it. Then go back as you can probably pick up the thicker f41 front sway bar for cheap. You probably have no sway bar in the rear and a small one up front. Hmnn 84 does that have a 200-4r? If it only has the three speed its a lot of gear for daily driver.
personally i would just buy the posi unit and put it in and i'm running 3.42 gears on the street with 2700RPM stall and it works great. as for the sway bar thing it all depends on what you are gonna do with it. if its gonna be a DD then i would get the bigger front sway bar and not put a rear bar on it from my expeirience the rear bars make the car loose in the rear end and thats not ideal for wet conditions.
Where can I find a posi unit to bolt into the stock 7.5 rear in a 86 g-body?
This rear already has 3.73 gears, so I would like to re-use those. I'm basically just looking for a posi carier that I can bolt in place and re-use the rest...
I don't want to hear about the 8.5 option. Thanks.
I got one out of a 86 Buick regal a while back but i think it is a aftermarket unit. I also seen a 87 Cutlass with the metal tag a while back but didn't even bother to ask about it. The one i have has 3.08 gears and my rear end is out of a SS with 3.73. So its either a spacer or new gears for me....I know you can get a posi unit out of s-10's, blazers, f-bodys and astro vans as long as they are a 26 spline. Most of those have the Gov-lock which i heard are not as strong as the spring preloaded type but don't quote me on that.
Yea JESSE I know. I mis read his post as not only looking for a posi but also for better gears. I focused more on getting the gear/rear cheap and then would suggest continueing to search for a salvage yard posi if the MCSS did not come with one.
I would buy a power trax locker for it, it gets rid of those weak spider gears and bolts in real easy, you can buy yourself some new gears and call it a day
The mini-spool locker that I found is: 78-7526-1
This is a richmond part for a GM 7.5 rear. It reads that is's for a 76-82 rear? I guess that this means that it won't work in an 86 gbody rear? Also reads that it's for the 26 spline axle. I thought that the stock axle was a 28 spline?
I'm wondering how crappy this will be to make a turn with? I only drive the car a few times a week when the weather is nice. The other detail is that it only gets driven a few miles at a time.
I could get a 8.5 rear for about $1400... It would be nice to only spend the ~$100 on the mini spool and go with it...
