Hello, all. New user here. Got a quick question with what I'm sure is not the easiest answer.

I recently nailed the rear end of my '84 Regal horribly on a set of train tracks (anyone who's ever driven up 31 through Kokomo, knows those tracks). So, I get it towed to a shop, and the tech tells me I need a whole new rear end. So he orders it, and when I leave the shop, there's a terrible banging noise from the rear end every time I hit a bump in the road.

I took it to two different techs; one said it's the body mounts, the other said definately not, it's the coil spring bushings. Any other ideas of what it could be, or confirmations of these two theories?

That's really vague, but it could be nothing more than a broken shock or shock mount.

Sorry it's vague, I'm very new to this. I know it's not the shocks; the seats for the coil springs are no longer there, however. Could that cause such a loud noise?

I'm sorry but it's really hard to say without seeing it. Are you saying the rubber isolators for the springs are gone?

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying.

I don't think that the isolators being gone would give you a banging noise. The spring isn't ever loose between the rear and frame. There would have to be a gap to create a bang. The reason i said anything about the shocks was that i've had a few cars that they were so bad the rear would hit the snubbers and create a banging sound. At any rate I hope you can figure it out soon. Got any pics of it?

does it sound like its coming from one side of the back of the car or both or middle? whichever take a picture of the side... or both and of course one of the whole car 😀

get up underneath the car and snap some pictures from every angle you can think of. then post them up here. if there's something to see, one of us will see it!

That's what I did initially. He was the one that said it was the body mounts.

I'll try to get ahold of a digi camera tonight and get up under there. Thanks for the help so far.

Oh, and here's a shot of when I first drove her home...Made a stop at Discount Tire on the way
