I am trying to find out what rear end and gears came in a stock 83 El camino conquista. If i remember correctly its a 7.5 in rear end but i really have no idea what gears came in the car. Thanks guys.

Most likely it had 2.41's originally. There is a 3 digit code stamped in the front(i think) of the passenger side axle tube. Someone on here could probably decode it and tell you what it had. Although that doesn't mean somone hasn't changed them over the years. If you really need to know the best way is to pop the rear cover of and count the teeth.

It may also have 2.29s if it's an auto, they had taller gears, manual-shifted cars had deeper gears (2.73, 3.08, etc.).

Look at your codes... I have a 2AH. 2.29 open rear, soon to be a 3.42 posi

Okay so I know most of this is personal preference/opinion but does anyone think that the 7.5 rear end can hold a fair amount of power with the right gears or is it better to just up grade the whole unit? I am thinking about doing a 9 inch with 3.90's but if people feel that the 7.5 can hold a fair amount of power then i might just do a gear swap.

You're on borrowed time with a bone stock rear. For the street you can build one and it will likely handle around 400-420hp fine, but you'll need all the upgrades... support cover, aftermarket axle shafts, and a good aftermarket posi/limited slip carrier.

Just grab ya a JY 7 5/8 camaro or s-10 posi diff 3 series carrier, a set of moser 28 spline G/N axles cut the buttons back about 1/16" on pass side axle and your set.Mines done great so far for the last 1 1/2 yrs. 450-475 hp 525-500lbs torque 464 big block buick Track driven only so it takes alotta abuse. Hell Ive seen 10 sec cars with 7.5's peg legs welded up hold together lol. Its stupid but hey it works for em .
