Have a 81 Malibu wagon been picking up extra parts. Have two different styles of trim. What year did they change?

Pretty sure it was 81 when they changed from the metal trim to plastic/rubber.

I always thought it was later, like '82, but you might be right about that, Jake.
'81 could be the year that they went with the crappy flexible quarter window side mouldings..
What a mistake. But I guess the GM bean counters saw that they could save a few cents by going with the flexi-crap.

My 81’ has the flexible seals. New to wagons and didn’t think they are inferior but the “chrome” is peeling/discolored. I have a couple sets of the other style in case I really decide I prefer it.

Guys have chosen to go with the early style ('78-'80) metal mouldings. However, it entails having to install studs to accommodate clips to hold them on.
The problem with the flexi type is that they do become compromised and you can't reuse them once they're removed. Plus. they can no longer be obtained, so your choices are limited.

There's at least 3-4 guys from this forum that converted to the early type mouldings.

Same clips. You can use the screws which act as studs to hold the clips on. Usually they're sold by companies that sell the clips. They're specifically made for that purpose. I'll try to find what I'm talking about.

I hope this link helps you out.

Somewhere in my notes I made note of the dimensions where the studs are placed on the window frames, etc.

81+ got the vinyl moldings, 78-80 got the aluminum.

There is/was a guy on the G body wagon Facebook group that was selling some sort of molding sets that he made

Brian,
Does he mention what the mouldings are made from? Also, If you find his listing, can you post a link to it?
