off topic. i had a balancer start to come apart once. the rubber was deteriorated and the outer part slid back and started to eat a hole in the timing cover.

and i have seen axle seals cut metal. on my blazer up front i had to replace the l/f axle seal for a leak and the shaft was cut. i put the new seal in but left it sticking out about 1/8". this isnt the first time i have seen a rubber seal cut an axle either.

I'm still on pontiacgp's side. Yes, some grit or something stuck at the seal could wear into the axle, but not the seal itself. There's just no way.
