Rebuilding my '86 307. Advice?

It sounds like you really put yourself in a bind... Your throwing mismatched parts onto an engine that was never designed to be a big performer from day one. You really should reconsider just getting a 350 or 403 it really wont kill you on fuel if thats what your biggest concern is. Just think about it this way, you would be buying all of the same parts for a 350 or 403 and in the end spending about the same amount of money if not less than you are with the 307. Its just not an economical engine to try and get high horsepower out of. If you threw the same parts at a 350 or larger it would toast the 307 with the same mods and still knock down decent fuel economy. Also, stick with the Q-Jet olds motors like them. I had an edelbrock on my car for a while and hated it so I switched back to a Q-Jet. It ran the best for me and got the best mileage, and still does on my 350. Like FE3x said a performer rpm intake will clear the stock hood, I'm running one on my 350 with no problems at all.

Engine mods almost finnished. just need to finnish modding the distributor. the high rise and Q-jet carb fit perfect under the drop base dual air-cleaner. and yes, the 350 and 400 would have given me the same power if not more for the same cost, but it seems everybody does that, and i enjoy being an individual, even if it is slightly more expenesive. 😀

What heads do you have on this engine? 5A? 7A?

X2.... You said its and 86 307 and had roller lifters in it so I'm assuming you have the small port 7A heads? If you do listen to FE3X and lose the high rise intake the ports on the 7A heads are tiny compared to that of other heads. They wont match and its going to be like hitting a wall when the air tries to flow through the manifold into the heads. Its going to run worse than if you would have left the stock A5 intake on it. Just my .02 though, live and learn I guess. Just hate to see you waste money, I'm only 20 and know what its like to be on a very tight budget.

Here's the difference between heads: Pictures from Olds G-Mail

You can see the ports are tiny compared to those of the 5A's which are the same size as earlier head designs.

heres pix before and after. i think the heads are actually 5A on my car because i dont remember them being as small as 7A. we cranked it over today and it started on the first crank... did not expect that haha

Lookin nice bro! Keep it up and keep us updated!

Yeah, you've have some major port mistmatch with that combo.

You'd be better off putting the original intake and carb back on and saving the new stuff for another engine.
